Port St. Lucie -

UPDATE: This event has been changed to SATURDAY ONLY.

Run, walk, bike – skateboard or rollerblade. However you do it, do it for foster care.

That’s the message Communities Connected for Kids wants to get out this May, during National Foster Family Appreciation Month. And to help get people moving in the right direction, the non-profit organization responsible for the local dependency system is challenging the community to participate in a statewide 1K For 1Kid.

The concept is simple: Register your family or team of colleagues, choose an activity and then do it for 1 kilometer (that’s a little more than half a mile)! You can walk, run, bike, swim – any physical activity that you can measure by distance. Complete your activity at your own pace, anytime between May 21-31.

You also can complete your activity with us at our #CCKThePark event, at Woodstork Trail Park, 1957 SE Hillmore Drive, Port St. Lucie, anytime from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, May 22, and Sunday, May 23.

We’ve partnered with the city of Port St. Lucie to lay out a 1K course along a winding, tree-covered, paved trail. The total trail is 1.27 miles for those who want to keep going even after completing their pledged 1K. The park also offers a passive fitness station and two observation/fishing decks extending out over the lake.

The course will be marked with educational signs that offer foster-care facts and contact information for anyone interested in learning more. CCKids’ event will coincide with similar events throughout the state of Florida during the same time. It’s all part of a coordinated effort to raise awareness for local foster-care systems and the need for more caregivers.
