Communities Connected for Kids congratulates Kandace Brooks and Doreen Hernandez for winning the fourth quarter Going the Extra Mile – or GEM – Award for excellence in serving children and families in Okeechobee and the Treasure Coast.

Doreen Hernandez - GEM Receipient

Hernandez, a case-management support worker in St. Lucie County, received the award in the Emerald Division, which covers case-management staff.

Doreen is known around the agency for her talkative nature and her welcoming heart, said Chyna Degginger, a case manager supervisor who nominated Hernandez for the award.

"She uses these gifts to connect with those in our system who often have the worst reputation: Teenagers." Degginger said. "Recently, Doreen has been assisting with the transportation of a teen in care who has had frequent placement disruptions.

"No matter what day or time, she immediately volunteers to help this child."

Teens respond well to her, she said. They talk to her about life aspirations, short-term goals and ways they can improve their lives.

"Doreen has successfully created a sense of stability for a youth who has lived a life that is anything but stable."

Kandace Brooks - GEM Recipient

Brooks, a behavioral health specialist in CCKids' clinical department, received the award in the Ruby Division, which recognizes the work of administrative and program staff.

"Kandace is looked at by community providers as very responsive, a team player and a resource," said Melanie Kranker, Brooks' supervisor.

For example, Brooks was asked recently if she could immediately organize a team of providers and specialists for a child who was at risk of losing a placement.

She was able to connect to community partners and offer services as well as open her schedule to accommodate the request, which ultimately led to greater stability for the child, Kranker said.

"With each case she touches she ensures she does all she can to reach a resolution," she said.

CCKids' Board of Directors recognized Hernandez and Brooks on a Zoom call during its July Board meeting. Each received $100 and a plaque.
